Description

Borriana is a small rural municipality of around 900 inhabitants, whose origins date back to the Roman Empire, as a place known for gold mining. Gold was extracted from the rivers Oremo and Elvo, that flow across the region. Sure enough, the name Borriana itself reminds of such mining activities.

The village is located in the plain of the lower Biella area, about 10 km far from the main town of the province, Biella, and borders with the municipalities of Cerrione and Sandigliano. Also, a small part of the Bessa Natural Park extends into the territory of Borriana. It is an area of relevant naturalistic interest, not only from the geological point of view, but also for the rare botanical species and for its fauna. Being part of the 200 km trails network named “Grande Traversata del Biellese” (great crossing of the Biella area), the Natural Park is a top destination for hikers, who can explore amazing places, thus enjoying art, culture, history and nature.

Like many villages of the lower Biella area, Borriana consists of an ancient core district that currently corresponds to the main square, piazza Mazzini, and several hamlets with relatively low population density, as those areas were, and still are, mainly devoted to agriculture. In fact, there is quite a high number of famers, producing cereals, fodder and fruit, and breeding poultry and cattle.

Borriana also hosts small and medium size factories, mainly specialized in the textile and clothing industry, craft businesses and self-employed persons.
